Thomas Jefferson, among others, emphasized that the vitality of democracy depends upon the education and participation of its citizens.  But the United States and its democracy are constantly evolving and in continuous need of citizens who can adapt its enduring traditions and values to meet changing circumstances.  Meeting that need is the mission of social studies.  In social studies, students will develop a core of basic knowledge and ways of thinking drawn from many academic disciplines, learn how to analyze their own and others’ opinions on important issues, and to participate in civic and community life as active, informed citizens.  We strive to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
