On August 8, Grayslake District 127 officially welcomed the Class of 2029 as incoming freshmen at both Grayslake North and Grayslake Central High Schools. The two high schools educate students from 10 feeder schools in 7 communities. Freshmen Orientation occurs before the first day of high school to create a runway for our newest learners to begin their journey.
Building community is the D127 theme for the year. Orientation serves as more than a tour. It’s a rite of passage where students come together for the first time as one class, united by purpose and potential.
At Grayslake Central, students entered the gymnasium through a giant Ram tunnel to the sound of cheers and applause from an energetic student welcome squad. Upperclassmen “Rambassadors,” dressed in matching Welcome to the Ramily shirts, guided the Class of 2029 through their new campus—answering questions, offering tips, and making sure every new Ram knew they belonged.
“This event is about more than just logistics,” said Principal Dan Landry. “It’s about showing students that they’re part of something bigger—part of a Ramily that’s ready to support them every step of the way.”
At Grayslake North, the vibe was joyful and expressive, true to the school’s 2025–26 theme: Do Something That Brings You Joy! Novice Knights showed off their personalities with everything from colorful wigs to Hawaiian leis, crowns, and even unicorn glasses. It was a colorful, confidence-boosting celebration of individuality and belonging. Students toured the campus, connected with classmates, and got their first taste of the school spirit that defines life at North.
“Freshman Orientation is about breaking down nerves and building up excitement,” said Principal Dr. Jim Roscoe. “We want our students to feel seen, supported, and ready to thrive. And if that means starting high school in unicorn glasses, even better.”
As Grayslake D127 continues its mission to empower all learners to launch their futures, orientation day proves that the launch begins not with classes, but with connection.
Welcome to high school, Class of 2029. We’re glad you’re here.
