staff opening day with fatheads

District 127 kicked off the 2025-26 school year with a high-energy Opening Day celebration that reminded us all why community matters in education.

Staff from both Grayslake Central and Grayslake North came together for a morning full of school spirit, music, laughter, and heartfelt recognition. The event was a showcase of the district’s theme for the year: Community Building.

With both marching bands setting the tone, the event brought energy from the start. Mascots Aires the Ram and Nigel the Knight made appearances, Fatheads (oversized head-shaped posters) of new staff members added humor, heartfelt messages from community partners and parents about the connection that is D127, and the ever-popular audience cam had everyone smiling.

But it wasn’t just about fun; it was also about connection.

“This event, and January’s D127 Day, serve as powerful and visible reminders that we are one district, united in our mission to empower all learners to launch their futures,” said Superintendent Dr. Mikkel Storaasli, whose opening message energized the room. “When staff feel connected, inspired, and supported, our students reap the benefits.”

A special moment came when retiree Patrick O’Connell, Department Chair for Student Services, was honored with his own Golden Jacket, a fitting tribute to a career of excellence.

This year, D127 welcomed over 40 new staff members, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff. For them, this celebration offered a memorable first impression of what it means to learn, grow, and lead in D127.

Opening Day was more than just a kickoff - it highlighted a vital truth: in today’s education environment, fostering a culture where both students and staff feel welcomed and engaged is essential. Opening days like these are crucial for building a strong school community and sense of belonging.

“When schools make space for connection, celebration, and fun, we strengthen the atmosphere of learning,” Storaasli said. “That’s when students and staff are truly engaged and present in every way.”

As the 2025-26 school year begins, D127 is marching forward with purpose and pride. The tone is set, the team is ready, and the community is strong.
