For Patrick O’Connell, supporting students has always been about relationships, meeting them where they are and helping them grow along the way.

After 14 years in Grayslake District 127—and a 37-year career in education—O’Connell is retiring from his role as Student Services Department Chair and counselor at Grayslake North.

Throughout his time in D127, he has worked closely with students from their earliest high school decisions through graduation, witnessing their growth both academically and personally.

“Working with students and watching them grow and change over time is really amazing,” he said. “From meeting them as eighth graders to seeing them walk across the stage at graduation, it’s incredibly rewarding.”

In a role spanning counseling, social work, and student wellness, O’Connell has focused on building a strong support system for every student.

“I want students to remember that they always have someone to talk to,” he said. “They don’t have to go through difficult times alone.”

That same mindset extends to his colleagues, where he has emphasized collaboration and shared success.

“When one of us succeeds, we all succeed,” he said.

Looking back on his career, O’Connell encourages future educators to stay connected to their purpose and take care of themselves along the way.

“Find the passion in what you’re doing and take care of yourself,” he said. “This work is a calling.”

While retiring from District 127, O’Connell is not stepping away from what he loves. He is exploring opportunities to continue working in education while also pursuing personal interests, including competitive pickleball and spending more time with his wife, Jan.

For O’Connell, the next chapter is not about slowing down; it’s about continuing to grow, staying connected, and embracing new opportunities.
